While you might think of a road trip as just mix tapes and nuanced moments of bonding, there is much more to a long car ride. Depending on the duration, destination, etc., certain priorities may shift but certain criteria remain steadfast, whether it is a one-hour cruise across the state or a cross-country odyssey. When it comes down to the logistics, there are a lot of things to take into account when preparing for a long car ride, some of which may seem obvious while others will not be as apparent.

Stock your Snack Bin

This one seems obvious but a lot of individuals may overlook this one. Don’t just toss whatever you have lying around into your glove box. If you fill up on a ton of sugar and coffee you will be filled with regret as you pass those state lines. Filling and healthy snacks like nuts, good quality jerky, and fruit will sustain you for a car ride and leave you guilt free to gorge on your impending holiday meal.

Check Your Car

Obviously you will need to fill up on gas, but have you taken the time to make sure your oil is topped off or your windshield wipers are ready to go with fluid? Try to schedule a check for your vehicle a week or two before you hit the road to make sure everything is up to snuff.

The same goes for your car insurance policy.  Take advantage of this time to update your car’s policy and be sure you know everything you are protected for and what you are not. By starting early you can edit or update your coverage before you hit the open road.

Crossing state lines means you could be on the road with drivers whose state-mandated minimums are lower than what you’re used to. Check with your agent to see if you have enough uninsured motorist coverage.

Prepare for Failure

Inevitably something will go awry. Whether it be car sickness, a flat tire, or getting lost, budget for these unpredictable things. Keep an open mind and be ready to tackle any obstacle. The same goes for accidents. Whether it be black ice, a gas station fender bender, or something else, be sure that you have the proper insurance protection that you need and the proper documentation on hand. With so much going on, the last thing you want to do is worry about having the correct coverage.

If something were to happen, ensure you have an emergency kit on hand, like this. Also stock a spare tire, an ice scraper, and jumper cables, just in case.

Give Thought to Your Belongings

Long trips also mean stops in unfamiliar areas. If you are bringing expensive gifts for the holidays, or even your laptop, your automobile policy probably does not cover those if they were damaged or stolen.  Just because your car is covered does not necessarily mean the belongings will be. Be sure to look into your policy and ask your agent if you have coverage. Your belongings are more likely to be covered by your renters or homeowners insurance, but be sure to check your limits for property away from your residence.

Remember to Have Fun

While there is a lot to keep track of and probably some frustrating traffic along the way, you can still enjoy your ride. If you are going solo, download a few podcasts or get an audiobook of something you’ve been dying to read or play your favorite tunes. If you happen to be traveling with family or friends, listen to some music and catch up.  By making the most of the time and enjoying the ride, you and your passengers will be much happier, but don’t forget to focus on the road!

Traveling is a crucial and necessary part of the holiday season for some. Hopefully, keeping a few of these tips in mind will help you have a fun and safe journey.
